To celebrate our cultural heritage and historical places, free entry to the manor and museum will be available on Heritage Day, Thursday 15th September.
Avebury Manor is a 16th century manor house set in the heart of the Avebury World Heritage site. The house has been lived in by many people over the centuries and was the focus of a popular BBC television series 'The Manor Reborn' which aired in December 2011. As part of this programme nine rooms of the manor were furnished in different styles to reflect the times in which people lived there – from the Tudor period until the 1930s. Visitor can experience these different periods as they explore the property and, unusually for a National Trust house, people are encouraged to enjoy it in a tactile way, by sitting on the chairs, playing billiards, or reading a book.
During September and until 9 October there will also be a sculpture exhibition in the garden.
The Alexander Keiller Museum is a small museum in the Old Farmyard at Avebury packed with fascinating artefacts from the Avebury half of the World Heritage Site.
In addition to free entry to the manor and museum, the National Trust are also offering free guided tours of the Avebury Stone Circles between 9 and 18 September, subject to volunteer availability. The tours take around an hour and are led by knowledgeable volunteer guides.
Laura Bailey, Programming and Partnerships Officer, National Trust Avebury said: "We're really pleased to take part in Heritage Open Days again this year, it's a fantastic opportunity to showcase our archaeological and historical heritage at Avebury, and lovely to be able to offer free entry for our visitors."
