Lorne House is a large Victorian villa in the lovely Wiltshire village of Box, just six miles from Bath. The house offers an elegant charm and gorgeous en-suite bedrooms, accompanied by a warm and personal welcome from the owners Bob and Liz Matthews. Lorne House provides the perfect base from which to explore both Bath and the nearby beautiful, historic villages of Lacock, Castle Combe, Bradford on Avon, Corsham and Avebury. Box village has many historic listed buildings including a “blind house” and the famous Box Tunnel. The village is surrounded by glorious countryside with fabulous walking and rambling routes.

Lorne House was built in 1876. Between 1920–1928, it was the childhood home of the Rev. W.V. Awdry, author of the Thomas the Tank Engine stories. He acknowledged that it was living here, lying in bed listening to the steam trains climbing Box Hill which provided the inspiration for his classic children’s tales.

Lorne House has been furnished to a very high standard; all rooms are en-suite, with wet-rooms or bathrooms, and come equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, flat screen television, iron and ironing board. Guests can use our very comfortable guest sitting room and we have a large outdoor verandah for sitting outside when the weather permits. There is free wifi throughout the house. Our breakfasts are hearty and substantial, with fruit, cereals, toast, traditional cooked English breakfast or continental options, served in our lovely light and spacious dining room. We source our foodstuffs locally and the marmalade is home-made.

We have lived in this area since 1999 and have a very detailed and personal knowledge of Bath and beyond; we are always very happy to make recommendations and give advice to visitors wishing to make the most of their stay or who have particular interests. We can provide personal recommendations for local restaurants, places of interest and have created our own maps detailing walks from Lorne House into the surrounding area.

Map & Directions

Road Directions

From the EAST:  From the M4 take Junction 17 south on the A350 direction Chippenham. Stay on this road until the A350 meets the A4 and turn right on this roundabout direction Bath.  Carry straight on for five miles and you will descend a hill into Box village.  Lorne House is on the right hand side immediately next to the Doctor’s Surgery.

From the WEST: From the M4 take Junction 18 south on the A46 direction Bath. Stay on this road for 11 miles.  As you descend the hill move in the right hand lane of the dual carriageway and carry on straight ahead under the road bridge at the Bath turnoff.  At the end of the dual carriageway go straight across the roundabout and carry straight on for 2 miles.  As you enter Box village stay left and take the left fork when the road splits, staying on the A4 (direction Corsham and Chippenham).  Carry on through the village.  Just after the second zebra crossing you will see Lorne House ahead on your immediate left hand side.
