Norden Farm Centre for the Arts celebrates the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with an outdoor extravaganza. Lovely Jub(i)lee: Come Together is on Saturday 4 June at 12pm – 4pm. Entry is free.
The afternoon of celebration will bring the community together with music, dancing, market stalls, food and drink.
Live music and dancing comes courtesy of the Dhol Collective. They are a Berkshire based drumming team of Dholplayers with a focus on rhythms of a Panjabi heritage. Twenty drummers will open the event, followed by a performance from 10 drummers and a Bhangra DJ. They’ll get everyone dancing with their fusion of traditional Panjabi folk rhythms and popular modern music.
The Ceilidh Liberation Front will lead an outdoor ceilidh. London’s most radical and vivacious ceilidh band bring dance for all the family – no experience necessary! With their energetic regime of folk dance, they breathe vigour and vitality into the traditional ceilidh, whilst honouring its roots and traditions. The ceilidh will move into the barn if it’s raining.
There’s also free Kite Making Workshops from Community Kite Project where children and families can create Patang Kites – the Indian Fighter Kite.
Our usual monthly market hosts stalls from local artisanal producers and the Café Bar will be serving food, drink and cream teas.
In the run up to the day, Norden Farm has been running workshops with local community groups including Achieving for Children and The Young Carers. They have worked with award winning community arts charity Same Sky and local artist Aysha Khan to create festival flags which will decorate the site on Saturday 4 June. The flags are a celebration of the participants identities, reflecting their stories and what matters to them most.
Other Jubilee celebrations at Norden Farm include a screening of Elizabeth: A Portrait In Parts on Saturday 4 June at 2pm. Tickets are £10.50 | £9.50 conc. The film is a unique feature documentary about the life of Queen Elizabeth II.
On display at Norden Farm is a collaborative portrait of Her Majesty The Queen, created by The Whitecroft Studio. The group of artists first created the portrait in 2012 to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It is a combination of forty nine individual canvasses to produce this unique portrait.
Also on display during the Jubilee is Home is Where the Heart Should Be – an exhibition from The Dash Charity in collaboration with artist Amelia Pimlott and Norden Farm. The Dash community will be creating artwork during workshops held at Norden Farm to celebrate creativity. Participants will decorate and fill a willow and tissue tree sculpture with colour and life, stories, hopes and dreams.
Dash have provided tutoring and support in a variety of creative arts to local families who have been affected by domestic abuse. The artwork produced forms an exhibition to showcase the stories of survivors, celebrate our Monarch’s 70 years on the throne and raise awareness locally of The Dash Charity and their work.
Lovely Jub(i)lee: Come Together is supported by Arts Council England and Berkshire Community Foundation.
