The British Museum was the first national public museum in the world, and today is home to eight million objects. Discover the vast diversity of human cultures from the dawn of human history to the present.

In 2022, the British Museum hosts The World of Stonehenge exhibition, revealing that the Britain and Ireland of four millennia ago were places of big ideas, commerce and travel.

Opening in May is Feminine power: the divine to the demonic, which explores the significant role that goddesses, demons, witches, spirits and saints have played in shaping our understanding of the world. These ticketed exhibitions sit alongside the permanent collection, and numerous free temporary exhibitions, meaning there’s always something new to discover.

The British Museum is located in London, at one end of the Great West Way route. For a dose of culture and history, you can begin or end your Great West Way journey here - why not include a trip to Stonehenge as well to travel through England's prehistoric past as you follow the Great West Way route.

Accessible facilities: we want the widest number of people to enjoy the building, collection and exhibitions and have lots of information to help you plan your trip. Find out more.

Families with children of all ages can enjoy a range of free gallery activities. Find out what activities and facilities are currently available.

We offer a range of food and drink options across the Museum.
