In 1497 John Cabot set sail from Bristol to find a new trade route to Asia. Instead, he arrived in Newfoundland and therefore became the original discoverer of North America. To celebrate the quincentenary of this voyage, a replica Matthew was built. Today The Matthew is Bristol-based and open to the public, undertaking short cruises and voyages overseas.

Trips in 2019

Our sailing season begins just next month. From March to September we’ll be running a range of cruises, from Avon Gorge Cruises that sail under the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge to Fish & Chip and Cream Tea trips around Bristol Harbour. We can accommodate up to 15 people in a group for our public trips, though for bigger groups the ship is available for private hire.

If you’d rather just hop on when the ship is docked, our knowledgeable team of volunteers are on hand to welcome you and share their knowledge of The Matthew.

The ship is wheelchair accessible and though we don’t have an accessible toilet onboard, it’s possible to use the facilities at MShed, moored right by The Matthew.

For more information visit our website or give us a call on 0117 927 6868.
