About

During this two-hour walk, discover Bristol's geological and human history and explore the City through the stories of the land beneath your feet!

Your guide Mathilde will lead you on a circular route from the Clifton Suspension Bridge, taking in some of the city's most iconic views and monuments whilst revealing the rocky history of Bristol's past. She will weave together the City's geological and human history through its folk stories, architecture and industry.

Journey to the time when Bristol was a tropical sea and learn about the fossil creatures in the rocks of the Avon Gorge. Listen to the story of Bristol's local giants, Goram and Ghyston, and how they created the landscape we see today. Learn about the connections between the natural resources beneath Bristol's surface and the City's successful history as an industrial port. Get your eye in and identify the common building rocks which make up Bristol's buildings and monuments. Whether you're a Bristol resident or new to the area, you will leave with a fresh perspective on the rocks which form the foundation of this City and are part of our everyday lives.

The route starts at the Clifton Suspension Bridge, winds down the Avon Gorge through Hotwells, the Docks and back up to Clifton. There are steep paths and steps along the route, so a minimum fitness level is required. This walk is not suitable for wheelchair users.
