Visitors to central Bristol on Saturday 29 July can see circus company Ockham’s Razor balancing, climbing & flipping through the landscape of Broadmead in a free, site responsive acrobatic performance called PUBLIC.
Hosted by Handstand Arts to mark the unveiling of the programme for the upcoming Circus City festival, performances will take place on and around the Podium at the central crossroads of Broadmead at 12pm and 2pm. The shows will feature young acrobats, dancers, climbers and parkour artists, defying the marginalised position of young people in our public spaces and bringing the spirit of Bristol as a city of circus to the surface - as they make the city’s architecture their playground.
PUBLIC is a new outdoor performance from groundbreaking circus company Ockham’s Razor about the ownership of public space. Urban space has become increasingly colonised by corporations with our malls, shopping centres and transport hubs being owned and policed by private interests. In this landscape there is less space for young people to take up public space - to experiment, play, rest together and build social bonds with their peers. Play has become a risky and subversive act.
In PUBLIC a graduate company of 10 young performers create an image of a reality where they are able to be utterly without guard in a public arena. Incorporating acrobatics, parkour and dance they move through the architecture of the streets, lifting each other over and around walls, stairs, obstacles - dancing with the fabric of the world. The show is about support, freedom and tenderness and asks how and where we can be uninhibited and unbound? At the end of PUBLIC young people and audience members are encouraged to join in with the show. The simple choreography will be shared over TikTok and Instagram and available in advance on Ockham’s Razor’s website.
Date: Saturday 29th July 2023
Times: 12 midday & 2pm
