With species numbers decreasing year on year, wildlife records are of more importance than ever. This introduction to biological recording will explain how to take quality records for both amateur and professional purposes. The course will give you the confidence to record wildlife and monitor a chosen area (e.g. their garden for birds). The day will be broken down into bite sized sections introducing monitoring and how to record certain animal groups as well as how to survey them and the laws behind certain species within the group.
The course is aimed at people wanting to know more about wildlife, how to make their sightings meaningful and how to monitor changes (e.g. maybe you let your garden go wild and want to measure what impacts it has had).
This course will also be a good steppingstone for students wanting a career in ecology and give a good foundation of knowledge for field survey skills. But most importantly, it will give people confidence to record wildlife and to get out and enjoy nature.
About the tutor: Dan is an ecologist with 12 years experience in protected species surveying and site assessments. Dan currently holds 3 protected species surveying licenses, these include a Class 2 science and conservation NE Bat license, Class 1 NE Great Crested Newt license, a NE Barn owl survey licence, and also a NRW Bat licence. He is also on the board of trustees for Arnos vale cemetery helping to maintain and enhance the site for wildlife and visitors. Dan is keen to get everyone involved with wildlife, especially people who feel they can't because they don't fit in or are not scientific enough. Dan loves to see people build in confidence and knowledge and is passionate about enabling people to make a difference for their local wildlife.
