Lovers of analogue, immerse yourself in the sensory splendour of 16mm in its centenary year! Step inside the darkness of the Crypt, to the click and whirr of the projector! Workshops in splicing, dicing and projecting your own 16mm film will roll alongside a programme of short films. Plus, live score performance activations from a very special guest. Presented by Compass Presents as part of the 7th edition of Cinema Rediscovered, the UK’s leading festival of classic cinema.
There’ll be workshops in splicing, dicing, and projecting 16mm films, guided by the expertise of Graham Hogg, Bristol analogue aficionado and founder of The Cube Microplex. Senior Film Lecturer John Podpadec from the University of the West of England (UWE) will explore the range of 16mm cameras that changed filmmaking, including the clockwork Bolex, the Canon Scoopic, a range of Arriflex reflex cameras and the Aaton LTR54.
The day will feature three live video performances (at 10am, 2pm and 4pm) by Bristol audiovisual artist, performer and composer Surgeons Girl.
A curated selection of classic 16mm film screenings will also run throughout the day (at 10am, 2pm and 4pm). The selection will include experimental shorts that encompass narratives and mind-bendingly absurd creations, featuring renowned 16mm filmmakers such as German avant garde filmmaker Hans Richter (1888 – 1976) and female director-screenwriter Lois Weber (1879-1939), a pioneer of early Hollywood.
