About

Chippenham Museum & Heritage Centre is housed in a fine 18th century grade II listed building.

The displays tell the story of the historic market town from prehistoric times up until the present day.

Visitors can discover more about the history of the town, its villages and the local area through the extensive collections and by meeting some of the former residents as they guide you through history.

The ground floor includes displays on Saxon Chippenham, Alfred the Great and Brunel’s railway. The first floor galleries display aspects of trade and industry and the effects of war on the town’s people. Also see a working model of a flourmill, temporary exhibition area, historic street panoramas, costumes and a children’s activity table.

There is a full programme of temporary exhibitions, children’s activities, walks , talks and special events.

Why not also visit the historic council chamber situated on the first floor of the medieval Yelde Hall nearby. Be transported back to 1816 to experience a lively Council meeting debating the end of the Napoleonic war and the decline of the weaving trade. The Hall also has a changing programme of exhibitions and special events.

My personal connection with Chippenham only goes as far back to the 1970's, when as children we were brought to Monkton Park open air swimming pool during the summer. This delightful museum is free... Read full review

This is a small museum of local history, and has some quite interesting displays. Has a 200 year old decorated bowl and some interesting artefacts from the two wars. Worth a visit Read full review
