There are lots of things to do in Wiltshire, besides Stonehenge - those iconic stones familiar all over the World. But don’t end your prehistoric time travels there. There are more mysterious sites nearby. From Avebury, where you’ll find the largest stone circle in Britain, to Old Sarum, an Iron Age hillfort offering almighty views.

Wiltshire is a welcoming rural county with excellent walking routes, making it a rewarding destination for a ramble. If you’re not sure where to start, enlist some local knowledge. Take a Magical History Tour with Salisbury, Stonehenge and Sarum Tours to find out the secrets of these special places.

You can also experience the region’s natural beauty at wildlife reserves, such as Jones’s Mill and Blakehill Farm. Or sample the fruits of the region with an English wine tasting and tour at a’Beckett’s Vineyard near Devizes.

The county has lots of lovely houses and gardens, perfect for pondering before sitting down to a traditional cream tea. Bowood House & Gardens was built in Georgian times, and has acres of Lancelot Capability Brown parkland to explore. While Mompesson House offers a unique view into home life during the era of Queen Anne. You might recognise it from the film Sense and Sensibility starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.

And if it’s culture you’re after, you’ll find lots of interesting things to see and do throughout Wiltshire. Climb 332 steps to take in the view from the tower at Salisbury Cathedral. Behold relics left by the locals of long ago at Wiltshire Museum. Or listen to a rousing orchestra or opera at Wiltshire Music Centre.

Canal & River Trust
